How to Leave a Legacy?

Steve: 'Great leaders -- whether they lead entire organizations or groups within them -- leave a legacy that transcends them and cements their contribution to the growth and transformation of their organization. How they close out their tenure has a lasting impact.'

  • CEOs rarely begin thinking about succession as soon as they should. For a number of reasons, including fear of confronting their own mortality(!), they put off dealing with succession longer than they should. (nb: het uitroepteken is van mij. Waarom?

  • CEOs need to understand how the unique context of their company will influence the way their succession process unfolds. What worked well for a predecessor or colleague in another company might not work well in a different setting. (nb: een soort HALO effect)

  • CEOs should be prepared to manage the rational, emotional, and political dynamics that accompany the succession process. CEOs who assume their succession will be straightforward are usually the ones who are surprised when the process takes on a life of its own. (vaak nog een verrassing, dat wel ja)

  • CEOs should recognize that succession isn't finished until the transition to the new CEO is completed. Making the choice of a successor can be difficult, but making a smooth transition can be even harder.

Three factors require attention for a successful transition: politics, practices, and emotions. If these are successfully addressed, it's more likely that a leader's vision, influence, and a positive legacy will survive his or her tenure.'

Korte toelichting op deze 3:

  • Politics; A leader must keep the greater good in mind and shape internal politics that will be constructive and support outcomes beneficial to the company, rather than clinging to a personal agenda. The departing leader can have the most impact by engaging his or her team in an open and candid dialogue about the future.

  • Practices; This is about transferring the knowledge, practices, and relationships that help the team left behind, minimize disruptions, and prevent surprises. Leaders must share the lessons they learned that were instrumental to their role and success in the organization.

  • Emotions; The transition will be an emotional experience for all parties. Leaders need to manage their feelings and be sensitive to others. The first step is to acknowledge these emotions exist, are natural, and can cloud one's judgment.
