http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W7WE1oP7d4

“We’re at that point analogous to when single-celled organisms were turning into multi-celled organisms. We are amoebas, and we can’t figure out what the hell this thing is that we’re creating.” aldus Computer Theorist Danny Hillis tijdens een recente MasterClass aan de Singularity University.

"Artificial Intelligence helps choose what books you buy, what movies you see, and even who you date. It puts the “smart” in your smartphone and soon it will drive your car. It makes most of the trades on Wall Street, and controls vital energy, water, and transportation infrastructure. But Artificial Intelligence can also threaten our existence.

In as little as a decade, AI could match and then surpass human intelligence. Corporations and government agencies are pouring billions into achieving AI’s Holy Grail—human-level intelligence. Once AI has attained it, scientists argue, it will have survival drives much like our own. We may be forced to compete with a rival more cunning, more powerful, and more alien than we can imagine." zo start James Barrat zijn recent verschenen boek Our Final Invention.

"Software has been an important, if often hidden, shaper of industries and consumer behaviors for several decades.

But in the past decade or so, we have seen how software can fundamentally alter, disrupt, and create industries, business models, and sources of competitive advantage. Software is the thread that stitches together what we call the “digital metasystem”—a digital environment that offers the ability to mine big data and connect and engage with customers anywhere and at any time." schrijven analisten van BCG in hun artikel The 2013 TMT Value Creators Report: The Great Software Transformation.

The winners will have established “digital DNA” in their organizations by having taken these steps:

  • People Practices. They will have taken a hard look at their board and executive team to see if they have been sufficiently savvy about all things digital and the role of technology. They will have had experience in managing rapid transformations.
  • Management Practices. They will have asked whether the strategic-planning process is adaptive and able to receive weak signals from customers, partners, and other participants in the market. Being adaptive does not mean focusing on the short term; the best strategic-planning processes must also address megatrends, such as the rising importance of software, and their consequences, as well as disruptive technologies and their potential to erode existing business models.
  • Innovation Practices. They will have reviewed the innovation process and made it faster and more customer-centric, while also pursuing blue-sky bets. They will have adopted techniques such as “scrum” and “agile” for software development.
  • Value Creation. They will have determined where, in the next three to five years, the large, new profit pools are likely to be, and they will have committed serious resources to business development, alliances, partnerships, and networking.
  • External Relations. They will have invested in investor relations and in explaining the digital-transformation story so that the share price reflects the company’s aims."

De slotopmerking in het rapport zegt feitelijk alles: "This is a long list; time is running short. Future winners must get moving now."

In the Future, Computers Will Learn.

N.a.v. de aankoop door GOOGLE van BOSTON Dynamics schrijft Financial Times columnist Robert Shrimsley een leuk(?) toekomstscenario in Google robots and terminator fears. Synopsis: de GOOGLE Zoekmachine is voortaan je levensechte personal assistant. ;-)

Algorithms Won’t Replace Managers, But Will Change Everything About What They Do, kunnen we lezen in het HBR blog. In die entry citeert Walter Frick uit het boek Average Is Over van Tyler Cowen: "Workers more and more will come to be classified into two categories. The key questions will be: Are you good at working with intelligent machines or not? Are your skills a complement to the skills of the computer, or is the computer doing better without you? …

If you and your skills are a complement to the computer, your wage and labor market prospects are likely to be cheery. If your skills do not complement the computer, you may want to address that mismatch. Ever more people are starting to fall on one side of the divide or the other. That’s why average is over."

Where does management fit into this?'

Cowen: "In any company, you need someone to manage the others, and management is a very hard skill. Relative returns to managers have been rising steadily; good managers are hard to find. And, again, computers are not close to being able to do that. So I think the age of the marketer, the age of the manager are actually our immediate future."
