Het thema van dit forum: "The Great Transformation, managing our way to prosperity" & vooruitgang c.q.

"We are at the beginning of a set of gigantic changes in society, for better or for worse. The future is open; nobody knows what it will hold. One thing we know: on this stage, managers will surely be of pivotal importance for shaping it."

Waar Straub het zittend management deze vaardigheden, zei het met enige scepsis, nog toedicht "Management is a real-world practice dealing with people and organisations. Managers can make all the difference in the world with their knowledge, their creativity, their emotions and their values.", schuift Gary Hamel het zittend management nagenoeg volledig ter zijde als het gaat om het in gang brengen van deze Tsunami m.b.v. de door Straub genoemde vaardigheden; iets dat Hamel al eerder deed.

"Large organizations are emotionally insipid (NB; 'smakeloos'). Managers know how to command obedience and diligence, but most are clueless when it comes to galvanizing the sort of volunteerism that animates life on the social web. Initiative, imagination, and passion can’t be commanded—they’re gifts." De titel van Hamel's bijdrage: "The Core Incompetencies of the Corporation." 'Incompetentie', het zegt al voldoende.... :-o

Most of us grew up in and around organizations that fit a common template. Strategy gets set at the top. Power trickles down. Big leaders appoint little leaders. Individuals compete for promotion. Compensation correlates with rank. Tasks are assigned. Managers assess performance. Rules tightly circumscribe discretion. This is the recipe for “bureaucracy,” the 150-year old mashup of military command structures and industrial engineering that constitutes the operating system for virtually every large-scale organization on the planet."

De oplossing volgens prof. Hamel: "To find a cure, we will have to reinvent the architecture and ideology of modern management — two topics that aren’t often discussed in boardrooms or business schools." They already understand that the first priority of a business is to do something truly amazing for customers."

  • "The Logic Trap.  Companies often have to consider doing what others believe is impossible; they can’t change radically by thinking within the boundaries of reason.
  • The Continuity Trap. Many business leaders take comfort in the past — essentially staring at the long-gone comet’s tail — rather than getting excited about the uncertainty of the future.
  • The Leadership Trap.  If the source of today’s competitive advantage lies in the interface between employees and customers, the leader’s role must change from being a commander to an enabler of bottom-up innovation."

As ideas come up from the bottom of the company, how do the middle managers decide which of these ideas will they push forward to the senior people who will then invest? To answer that, Joe Bower gave us a construct he calls “impetus.” (NB: 'impuls') Some ideas get impetus and come to the top, and other ideas don’t get impetus and they languish. Once you are exposed to that construct – my gosh, your understanding of how the resource allocation process works is so far advanced."

"When a society accepts the practices, methods, and measures of the 20th century to conceive the 21st century, failure is inevitable. In order to consider new ideas, you have to be willing to let go of ones that no longer serve you." stelt één van de andere inleiders business innovator Nilofer Merchant.

From the Knowledge Economy to the Human Economy:

The path ahead for leaders—as Peter Drucker foresaw with such prescience—is to create human operating systems that allow humanity to be expressed. He understood that, in a human economy, it is no longer enough to follow rules. As he famously noted, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”

We need to deeply internalize and scale into our human operating systems this profound distinction. In so doing we will inculcate a culture in which everyone is a leader doing the next right thing. Certainly, machines will continue to get better at many things that humans have traditionally done in businesses, but machines will never be the source of enduring advantage. The companies that succeed best will those that focus on the humanity of work, and capitalize on what humans can uniquely do."
